US District Judge overturned the mask mandate for commercial airlines

After a federal judge determined that the government’s mask mandate on commercial airlines was unconstitutional, air travelers in the United States have began removing their Covid-19 face masks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously insisted that mask regulations be in place until May 3, but that mandate was overturned by a Florida judge on Monday. Following the recent legal judgement, airlines have begun to soften mask regulations and have made mask wearing optional, while some have stated that facial coverings may be necessary when travelling to or arriving at particular destinations.

The government’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it would not enforce mask wearing on public transportation or hubs as a result of the new judgment. Prior to the mandate, airlines had their own mask rules in place, but the majority of them have since revoked the obligation.

After US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle overturned the mandate, the CDC said on Wednesday that it has filed an appeal with the Department of Justice. The organization claims that the move is clearly within CDC’s legal jurisdiction and remains vital for public health. According to the officials, an order requiring masking in the indoor transportation corridor is still required for public health reasons.

The CDC’s mask rule, however, is presently not in place as a result of Monday’s court ruling. Major airlines began enforcing mask restrictions for US tourists in the spring of 2020, before the federal government mandated them in February 2021 for flights and other forms of public transportation.
